Packaging and Sustainability

Direct Source Packaging is proud to offer a variety and materials and ideas designed to assist our customers in developing more environmentally-friendly packaging programs. We understand that this process can be frustrating, but we are here to help you determine what is best for your particular project.

At Direct Source Packaging our answer is "That Depends".
There are many things that can be done to improve the environmental impact of a packaging product. But that depends on a variety of issues so we start with a series of questions: How will the product be used? What alternatives to the product exist? What material was previously used to manufacture the product? In which communities will the product be used? etc. The first step in the process is to review the packaging options currently available, identify as many potential environmentally-friendly options as possible, and determine which combination of materials and processes will yield the greatest possible improvement over the previous packaging product.

Sustainability:

It is important to remember that sustainability is not a thing. Sustainability is the concept of appreciating our natural environment and developing products and processes for our specific businesses and industries that will limit or eliminate our negative impact on the environment. The primary considerations of this concept are:

  1. Is the product responsibly manufactured?
  2. If possible, does the product contain recycled content?
  3. Can the product be e-used?
  4. Once the product's life-cycle is complete, can the product be recycled?

The concept of Sustainability also encompasses whether or not your packaging will influence others to be more considerate of the environment in both their use of your product and in their behavior in general. Does your packaging encourage people to recycle? Does it instruct them how to recycle or re-use the product.
